The members of the “Los Girasoles” communal bank meet every two weeks in the beautiful city of Calceta, a city known for its hardworking people and beautiful women. This group is made up of 11 women and 2 men who work in different fields, such as farming, general sales, and other things. When they learned about the benefits through the institution, they decided to join a while back to be able to access loans through “Fundación Espoir.”

Gema is one of the members. She’s 38 years old, married and has three children, ages 14, 12, and 7. They all attend school. Her husband is a merchant.

In order to earn something on her own and be able to help her husband and children as well, she sells all types of Leonisa brand clothing, as well as Lebel products (beauty products, cosmetics, perfumes, and ladies’ accessories). She sells door to door and goes out three or four times a week. She takes advantage of mornings while her children are in school. She sells and collects every week, since she also sells on credit. She’s been doing this for nine years and has many customers.

She will use the money from this loan to buy clothing, perfumes, creams, accessories, and other products. She has been in the communal bank from the beginning and she likes it because the loans are a great help to her and the group.

She would like a car or her own shop.

Additional Information

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
