Ulpiano's story

Ulpiano is a 52 year old man who lives in Santo Domingo which is one of the youngest cities in Ecuador. Currently, it has become the focal point between the mountain region and the coast of the country. It is a privileged place, not only for its ethnic richness but also for the unusual landscapes that you can find as soon as you enter this beautiful city. Santo Domingo de los Colorados belongs currently to the province of Santo Domingo of Tsachilas, recently created in 2007. The main holiday of Santo Domingo is celebrated with an intense influx of visitors, commercial and cultural exchange. A large festival takes place in the facilities of the Rachers' Association. There the best examples of the different breeds and crosses that are raised in the ranches of the region are shown and compete.

Ulpiano is a father to three children. Nevertheless, he lives with only one of them who is still a child. The other two already have independent lives. To survive, Ulpiano has been dedicated to farming for twenty five years and has specialized in planting corn and beans which are the products in greatest deman in the region and also in all of Ecuador and this ensures in large part that his sales are assured.

This businessman wishes to invest in his land buying agricultural inputs like better seeds and fertilizers in such a way that he can increase his productivity and sell more products, which upon selling are going to generate better income. Ulpiano gives work to various farmers who live close which benefits some families in the area. His day is from sunrise to sunset. He comments that he would like to see his community grow but not lose its traditions.
