Leonardo is married and has two children who are school-aged. They live in two rooms in his in-law's house. The home is located in the northern part of the city of La Paz.
Leonardo currently works as a driver for more than 8 hours a day, up until the late hours of the night. This occupation carries a lot of risks, but he needs the earnings to cover the expenses for his family's food, education and basic services.
Leonardo needs a loan to do maintenance work on his vehicle. He wants to buy a battery and tires, because this is the only source of income he has to support his family.
Leonardo's dream is to increase his income so that he could acquire a house through an anticrético (lease arrangement). This would enable him to provide more security for his family, and improve their quality of life.
This is the first time that Leonardo has worked with IMPRO together with Kiva.
IMPRO is a small non-profit organization that has been offering micro credit to the working poor in the Bolivian cities of La Paz and El Alto since 1995. IMPRO’s goal is to fight poverty by offering loans to small business owners who cannot access credit through the regular banking system due to a lack of guarantees or collateral.
To ensure that everyone has access to credit, IMPRO maintains a low interest rate by minimizing operational costs. IMPRO’s partnership with Kiva, which began in 2007, has allowed IMPRO to expand its services while maintaining these low interest rates.
