Adem
Adem is 44 years old, married and has seven children between the ages of 9 and 24 years old. Three of his children are currently attending school. He works in a primary school as a maintenance worker, repairing and taking care of the doors and windows of the school. Adem is the only one who supports his family.

In order to have more income for his family, Adem also supplements his income by working a second job doing transportation. Recently, he purchased the truck for his transportation business with borrowed money. He transports different things depending on the needs of the clients. Mostly, he transports and delivers large household furniture and appliances for people to new homes or during moves.

He hopes in the future to also be able to buy a cow in order to support the dairy needs of his family. His goal is to provide a better education for his children considering that education will lead to his children’s better future.

Roma people and ethnic Serbians have historically faced a tremendous amount of hardship in Kosovo, and are still socioeconomically and politically vulnerable. During the 1998-1999 war, the fighting displaced 250,000 people. Among those displaced were an estimated 80-90% of the region’s Roma population. Today, Roma and ethnic Serbians living in Kosovo still face discrimination and are excluded from many aspects of society, including fair political representation and high rates of unemployment.
