Paulina, 32, is married and has three children two of which are in school; she never had the opportunity to attend school. She sells vegetables. She buys them at wholesale and resells them to other customers. She started this business when she got married because she needed extra income to support her family. To date she has 12 years’ experience and her husband, who does the same kind of work, helps her out.

She organized a group to request a loan that will be used to buy more merchandise to sell and be able to stock up to meet customer demand. She hopes in future to have large capital of her own.

The other group members are merchants, raise domestic animals and are craftswomen.

La señora Paulina está casada tiene 32 años de edad, no tuvo la oportunidad de estudiar, tiene 3 hijos 2 de los cuales están estudiando, se dedica al comercio de verduras, lo compra por mayor y lo vende a otros cliente, inicio este negocio cuando se caso ya que necesitaba otros ingresos para sostener a su familia, hasta el momento lleva 12 años de experiencia, cuenta con el apoyo de su esposos quien se dedica al mismo trabajo.

About Asociación ASDIR

ASDIR (Asociación de Desarrollo Integral Rural - Association for the Development of Rural Communities) is a community-based organization that works to promote development in the villages and communities where it serves. It was founded in 1999 in the village of Nimasac, Totonicapán Department, by a handful of local men and women to support community projects and group loans. Today ASDIR has 5 offices across 3 departments (Totonicapán, Sololá and Suchitepéquez) serving more than 6,000 clients, most of them in rural communities.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
