Maria is a hardworking person who has had to overcome great difficulties in her life. Thanks to her drive to get ahead, she has been able to overcome all of these challenges.

Four years ago, her husband was without work and they needed to earn income for their household that they share with their two children. Maria decided to open a general store, which took a lot of effort, but is now the source of income for their household. When her husband does not have other work, he helps in the store, and sometimes her younger son helps her as well. Between the three of them, they have slowly been overcoming the difficulties with the store and so their quality of life has been improving. To overcome a lack of capital that she has, Maria is asking for a loan to purchase basic items to stock her store since they have run out of some items.

Her dream is to improve her business and allow her family to have a better quality of life and better financial opportunities to get ahead.

Important Information

This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
