The communal bank "Kantutas de Exalatción" will begin its first loan cycle in Pro Mujer as part of the regional center of Villa Exaltación. It consists of nine members and is governed by a board of directors, with Señora Gimena as its president. The members of the communal bank conduct a variety of businesses. Among them are transportation, store and butcher shop, hardware store, cosmetics sales, accommodations, selling clothing, selling sweaters, and selling sandwiches.

The loan that they will take out will benefit these little micro-entrepreneurs, one of whom is Señora Gimena. She comments that this is the first time that she has been part of Pro Mujer, joining at the invitation of her friend, who is a member of the institution. Now she has a business of selling clothes. She tells us that she began this business with the encouragement of her parents a number of years ago.

The loan that she will take out now will be used to increase her capital by purchasing clothing to sell; she will buy from wholesale dealers and will then sell at her sales location. This form of work allows her to generate income to support her family, since she is in a common-law marriage and has two children.

When she is asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, she responds that she likes the health training and the loans.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
