This communal bank is called “Mil Soles” (“Thousand Suns”). It is made up of 19 entrepreneurs who do various kinds of work, among which are selling clothing, making pastries, artisan work, plumbing services, slab work, decorations for the home, and services, among others. All of them are from the city of Osorno.

Lorena, a member of the communal bank, is standing in the first row in the photo, third from the left. She is wearing a dark green jacket, her hair is long, dark brown, and styled, and she is wearing some pearl earrings.

She works in handcrafts and has made ribbon adornments and wedding invitations for 2 years. She says that she works in her house every day and her schedule is distributed according to her availability.

She buys the merchandise and supplies she needs in the city of Santiago at different distributors and stores where she finds items for making the wedding invitations at a low cost and therefore at an economic advantage.

With the loan, she will buy foam and special paper to make all kinds of cards.

The goals for the business are to grow, to add more decorations and flower arrangements to the events, and to continue selling wedding invitations, birthday cards, and whatever her customers order for special events.

Lorena lives with her husband and four children, aged 3, 8, 10, and 20, who are students. Her dreams at the family level are to have her own house and to give her children the best, a good quality of life and education so that tomorrow they will be great professionals.

She is very happy and grateful for the opportunity given by Fondo Esperanza, since it will let her invest in her business. With respect to the communal bank of which she is part, she says that in it there is very good communication. On the other hand, the trainings have helped them to learn new sales and accounting strategies.

Osorno is a city located in the southern part of Chile in the Los Lagos region. It is an important farming center, identified as “The Country of Milk and Land of Meat” of Chile. Notable among its farming activities are wheat and oat cultivation and raising cattle for meat and milk processing, as well as farm equipment production. Osorno has the distinction of having the only indoor soccer stadium in Chile, the Rubén Marcos Municipal Stadium.

Este Banco Comunal se llama “Mil Soles” está conformado por 19 emprendedores quienes se dedican a diferentes rubros, entre los cuales se encuentran; venta de ropa, repostería, artesanía, gasfitería, trabajo en piedra laja, adornos para el hogar, servicios entre otros. Todos ellos pertenecientes a la ciudad de Osorno.
Lorena integrante del grupo del Banco Comunal, quien en la foto se encuentra de pie en primera fila, ocupando el tercer lugar de izquierda a derecha, viste un chaquetón de color verde oscuro, su cabello es de color castaño oscuro y largo, lo usa tomado y luce unos aros de perla.
Ella se dedica al rubro de artes manuales, realizando encintados y partes de matrimonio, desde hace 2 años. Comenta que trabaja en su casa de lunes a domingo y su horario lo distribuye de acuerdo a su disponibilidad.
La mercadería e insumos que va necesitando los compra en la ciudad de Santiago, en diferentes distribuidoras y locales donde encuentra articulos para realizar los partes de matrimonio a bajo costo, por lo tanto conveniente económicamente.
Con el crédito comprará goma eva, papeles especiales para realizar todo lo que es tarjetería.
Las metas de su negocio es crecer y agregar a los eventos más decoración y arreglos florales, y seguir con las ventas de los partes matrimoniales, tarjetas de cumpleaños y lo que su clientela le pida para eventos especiales.
Lorena vive junto a su esposo y 4 hijos de 20, 10, 8 y 3 años de edad quienes se encuentran estudiando. Sus sueños a nivel familiar tener su casa propia y darle lo mejor a sus hijos, una buena calidad de vida y estudios para que el dia de mañana sean grandes profesionales.
Ella se encuentra muy contenta y agradecida de la oportunidad brindada por Fondo Esperanza, ya que le permitirá invertir en su negocio. Respecto al grupo del Banco Comunal del cual forma parte, comenta que en éste existe muy buena comunicación. Por otro lado las capacitaciones le han servido para aprender nuevas estrategias de venta y contabilidad.
Osorno es una ciudad que se ubica en la zona sur de Chile, región de Los Lagos. Es un importante centro agropecuario que se identifica como "La Patria de la Leche y Tierra de la Carne" de Chile. Dentro de su actividad agropecuaria se destaca el cultivo de trigo y avena, la crianza de ganado, para el procesamiento de carnes y lácteos además de la fabricación de equipos agrarios.
Destaca en Osorno el único estadio de fútbol techado de Chile, el Estadio Municipal "Rubén Marcos”.

About Fondo Esperanza

Fondo Esperanza (FE) is a private non-profit organization that supports entrepreneurship by providing micro-credit and training to people living in poverty in well over 100 cities throughout Chile. By providing these services, FE aims to improve the living conditions of the entrepreneurs and their families. In 2010, FE provided loans to more than 41,000 entrepreneurs. It utilizes a communal banking model in which groups of 18 to 25 clients meet on regularly and guarantee each other’s loans. The members use their portion of the loan to create or expand their own businesses. In the group meetings, clients receive training though the FE Entrepreneurship School, which enhances clients’ personal and business skills and ability to work in groups.

The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
