Lucy is a resident of Murang’a and a single mother with two children aged three and four years. She has been in farming for twelve years and currently has a farm which produces beans, maize, cabbages, tea and pigs. She has one farmhand.
Lucy has requested a loan of 40,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to boost her pig-farming business. She says this will improve her family's living standards and will help to expand her farming business.
She however notes drought and animal diseases are the main challenges.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
