Fairfax is a farmer in the Nkubu area of Central Kenya. He is aged 29 years but has been in farming since his teenage years. His farming activity produces cereal and stands as his main source of income although he also operates a retail shop in the local market.
Fairfax says a loan of 60,000 KES will help him buy poultry birds for a venture into poultry farming and help him diversify his farming business with a possibility of generating better income in all seasons. He says the poultry business would do well since it is not affected significantly by a lack of water. He aspires to eventually have a flock of 5,000 birds.
He adds that farming has become a good source of income to smallholder farmers.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
