James is a resident of Murang’a. He is married and has three children between the ages of 16 and 32. He runs his farm with one farmhand. His farm currently produces coffee, milk, tea, poultry, and pigs.
James has requested a loan of 50,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to buy piglets. He says pig farming has become popular in the area. He is also motivated by the high rate of reproduction in pigs. He believes he will be able to educate his youngest child with his farming income, as well as improve his dairy farming, which does well but faces challenges of fluctuating milk prices and feed prices. He laments of the high cost of farming inputs.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
