James is a father and a farmer in his rural home area of Nkubu. He has been in active farming for six years, with his farm producing milk, bananas, and vegetables. This helps in meeting his family’s basic needs. He is also a charcoal dealer.
James has made a loan request amounting to 50,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to meet the cost of constructing a zero grazing unit (stall-feeding in order to make better use of limited land area, feed, and organic resources) within his farm and improve his dairy farming business. He says the income will help him meet the family’s basic needs and more particularly, the education of the children.
He, however, points out that poor infrastructure and low prices in the local market for the farm produce remain the main challenges.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
