Maria Soledad
María has ten years’ experience making clothes and worked for a firm for many years. But because the father of her children abandoned them some time ago, María was left in charge of all household obligations. She lives with her two children and she must insure a good quality of life for them.

Seeking to earn higher income, María set the difficult goal of setting up her own sewing workshop and about a year ago started her own workshop that although she started out with little capital, she’s managed to move forward thanks to her constant efforts. In order to provide better customers service, María is looking for a loan to buy a straight-stitch sewing machine to be able to offer all-inclusive sewing services.

Her greatest dream is that her two children have access to a good quality education and in future to a university education. She also hopes her sewing workshop will move forward and one day employs other very needy people.

Important Information

This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
