The Nueva Asunción communal bank will start its second cycle with Pro Mujer as part of the Patacamata regional office. It is comprised of ten members, and it is run by a board of directors. Juana is the president. The businesses that the group members are involved with are diverse, and they include selling sheep, buying and selling “chuño” [a freeze-dried potato product], selling vegetables, knitting by hand, a neighborhood store, and selling potatoes.

The loan they will take will benefit the micro entrepreneurs in Juana's group. She says that she has been a member of Pro Mujer for two cycles, and she joined by invitation from one of the Institution’s promoters who visited her at home. She now has a business selling sheep, which she started with her husband, who taught her this business activity.

The loan that she will now take is to increase capital in order to buy sheep, which she will buy in her own community. She will later sell them at nearby fairs. This type of work allows her to generate resources, as much as possible, to support her family. She is married and has five children.

When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, she replied that she likes the health services.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
