Mergim is from Kosovo. He lives in a Roma community, where loans have helped this area to improve their life and business. He is married and has four children ages one to twelve years old. Mergrim lives together with his brother’s family. They all live under extremely poor and unhealthy conditions in a small old house with three rooms.

Mergim works on a cattle farm. He has been in his business for a long time and he doesn’t earn enough to support the needs of his family. His job is the family’s main source of income. Mergim really wanted to have his own house with a more comfortable environment for his family.

He also thinks it is very important for his family’s health in the future.

Recently he started to build a new small house in the same location. The money he generates from his business is not enough to finish building the house. The loan he is taking will be used to buy the building materials such as quarry stones and cement for completing the house.

His goal is to keep improving his home to have more comfort and live in a pleasant environment with his family.

He really appreciates all KIVA lenders!

More information about this loan

This loan will support the economic aspirations of minority people in Kosovo. Roma people and ethnic Serbians have historically faced a tremendous amount of hardship in Kosovo, and are still socioeconomically and politically vulnerable. During the 1998-1999 war, the fighting displaced 250,000 people. Among those displaced were an estimated 80-90% of the region’s Roma population. Today, Roma and ethnic Serbians living in Kosovo still face discrimination and are excluded from many aspects of society, including fair political representation and high rates of unemployment. By supporting this loan you are helping provide opportunity to marginalized populations.

About KosInvest

KosInvest is a micro-enterprise development organization that provides loans to help people in rural Kosovo generate more income and improve their living conditions. It offers a wide range of loan products, from loans tailored to micro and small enterprises to loans designed to help women-headed households.

About Housing Loans

Many poor families cannot afford housing that meets their needs. When you make a housing loan on Kiva, you give people access to flexible capital to obtain or improve their homes. Better housing means better health, sanitation, and even educational outcomes for children. A house can also be much more for entrepreneurs who run businesses out of their homes. In this way, housing and small business loans on Kiva share a common purpose: to alleviate poverty and enable families to enjoy more stable lives.
