Lila, 38, has a partner and five school-aged children. She is a member of the communal bank "El Esfuerzo es Grande" (Effort is Great), a group made up of nine members who work in various trade activities. Lila has worked selling food and popsicles for four years. At night she also sells sandwiches and salchipapas (fried potatoes with hotdogs) from a sandwich cart. Lila started this business with the idea of helping with home expenses since her husband's salary wasn't enough.
Lila works very hard. Thanks to her effort and dedication she has been able to give her children an education, she has built her house, and at the same time, she has given her family a better quality of life. With the goal of continuing to work, she is applying for a new loan to buy ingredients (potatoes, chicken, etc.) Lila will meet her goals with a lot of work and effort. This is a Group Loan
In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
