This committee from the San Pedro Vivienda neighborhood resulted from contact made in the office in Encarnación with one of the first groups of this type. After a series of informational meetings about the project, the women enthusiastically formed their committee.

The committee is made up of 15 working women and houswives who carry out different activities to help with their family income and provide education and food for their children. Among the various activites they do are: general store, bakery, bar, sale of clothing, sale of cosmetics, sale of a variety of goods, sale of food, jewely, chipas (a typical dish form Paraguay), sale of cleaning supplies and others. Each member receives an equal amount of the group loan.

Their previous loans were paid on time. This group is very united and organized, as in addition to their businesses, they organize various activities to raise funds which they divide up for their personal savings. They would like a new loan to invest in their businesses and to continue to grow as micro-businesswomen.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
