Sarojini is a 43-year-old woman living with her son, aged 22. She lost her husband in an accident in 2008. Since then she has been working hard to manage her family. She started a broilers (meat chicken) farm on a small piece of land that she owns with the help of her son. Meat chickens reared indoors reach slaughter weight at the age of three months and after three months she sells them to local meat shops. She currently has 2000 chicks on her farm and wants to buy 2000 more to meet the market demand. She says that there is a lot of demand for meat during the local festivals and auspicious wedding seasons.
She needs a loan amount of 40,000 Indian Rupees (INR) to invest in buying the 2000 additional chicks, feed and medicine for them. She also plans to spend a major portion of her loan to construct a new shelter to house the additional chicks. This loan will help her to earn enough to construct a house of their own and arrange for her son's wedding.
