A loan of $1,200 helped to buy cheese and spare parts.

Ana María's story

Here we meet Ana, 39, who has a common-law husband and two children, ages 21 and 10. The youngest goes to school. Her husband is a school transportation driver and also a merchant.

Being the good wife that she is, she is taking out a loan for her husband's business. Besides being in transportation he also sells cheese. Three times a week he goes to Chone or Tosagua, which are the cities where he buys cheese that he later distributes to retail merchants in the local market. For over ten years he has been in business and it is going well.

This new loan will be used to buy cheese and spare parts for her husband's businesses. She has been in the communal bank since it began and is its acting treasurer. She likes the group because it is very organized and responsible.

Her goal is to buy a newer car.
