This communal bank called “En ti Confío” [I believe in you] comprises 18 entrepreneurs of different professions including: selling potatoes and cabbages; serving breakfast; managing a vendor stall; selling clothing; making handicrafts; electrician; dressmaking; and other services. All the members live in the city of Talca.

Elsa, the communal bank's secretary, is shown crouching in the second from right position in the photo. She is wearing dark brown pants and a brown jacket with orange collar; her purse strap crosses her jacket; and her brown hair is worn down. For 15 years, she has been selling many kinds of new clothing. She works from her house from Monday to Friday, and Saturday and Sunday she manages a vendor stall. Her schedule depends on her availability. She must buy her merchandise in Santiago from stores that offer prices low enough to make her business viable. She will use the loan to buy clothing and accessories such as necklaces, rings, and other items.

One of Elsa's goals is to open a boutique in the center of the city where she lives and generate more income to improve her circumstances. She lives with her parents and her 3-year-old son and hopes to open her boutique as soon as possible so that she can help her family financially. She is pleased and grateful for the opportunity offered by Fondo Esperanza because it allows her to invest in her business. She has great confidence in and respect for her communal bank; through her training, she has learned accounting practices and new selling strategies.

Talca is part of the Maule region located in center of the country. It is the region's administrative, economic, and cultural center and the most important city in Chile's Central Valley. There is an interesting Chilean phrase, "Talca, París, y Londres" [Talca, Paris, London], which some say comes from misstating an English phrase "Talca looks like London," referring to fog that often shrouds Talca during the winter as it does the English capital city.

About Fondo Esperanza

Fondo Esperanza (FE) is a private non-profit organization that supports entrepreneurship by providing micro-credit and training to people living in poverty in well over 100 cities throughout Chile. By providing these services, FE aims to improve the living conditions of the entrepreneurs and their families. In 2010, FE provided loans to more than 41,000 entrepreneurs. It utilizes a communal banking model in which groups of 18 to 25 clients meet on regularly and guarantee each other’s loans. The members use their portion of the loan to create or expand their own businesses. In the group meetings, clients receive training though the FE Entrepreneurship School, which enhances clients’ personal and business skills and ability to work in groups.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
