The members of the group SABOUGNOUMA 6 are married women averaging 39 years of age and three children each all living in polygamous families in Nagnassoni, a village in SIKASSO (3rd administrative region of the Republic of Mali). The women are collaborating with the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso to carry out their farm work during the rainy season. They are on their second loan with the institution. The past loan was indeed repaid.

The crop grown is sorghum, as is the case with Maimouna, who is standing in the middle of the photo. With her loan, she intends to purchase farm inputs and to cover the cost of plowing to maintain one hectare.

After the harvest, the produce is sold at the village and at the SIKASSO market to a customer base composed of men and women. Maimouna plans on making an average profit of 95,000 francs CFA per planting. This profit will enable her to repay her loan and also to help her husband in covering day-to-day expenses.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
