Jerusha is a farmer in her rural home in Nkubu, Central Kenya, where she lives with her husband and four children aged between 17 and 11 years all of whom are schooling. She has been in active farming for thirteen years with her farm’s current produce consisting mainly of maize and beans.
Jerusha has requested a loan of 30,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to buy dairy goats. She says she will venture into dairy goats farming due to their resistance to harsh weather conditions and their high nutritional value. She says improvement in her farming income will help boost her bananas retail business she has been running in the local market.
Jerusha mentions poor rains and undeveloped local markets which compels farmers to sell their products to far-off markets as the challenges that need to be addressed.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
