Jane is a resident and a farmer in her rural home area in Central Kenya. She is married with three children; the last one is of school-going age. Jane has been in farming for 14 years and currently runs her farm with the help of one farmhand. Her farm produces milk, beans and maize for the local market.
Jane has requested a loan of 60,000 Kenyan shillings (KES) from Juhudi Kilimo to buy a chuff cutter to ease her dairy feeding. She says this will also help save her time and reduce the waste of costly dairy feeds. She reiterates the major part of her farming income will go into educating her last-born child.
Jane mentions rampant dairy diseases and pests that result in huge losses to farmers as her major challenges.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
