Lona is a mother of three children with the first and second-born being aged 9 and 6 years and the last only three months. She has been in farming for eight years and running the farm with the help of five farmhands on a temporary basis. She does a lumbering business besides farming.
Lona has requested a loan of 41,600 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to buy and insure a dairy cow. She reiterates the dairy loan will boost her farming income and enable her to expand even the lumbering business. Her focus is to buy a truck to help in transporting her farm produce.
She plans to continue working with Juhudi Kilimo to access bigger loans. She however notes the major challenges in farming include counterfeit products of inputs and bad debtors especially with her lumbering business which informs her main focus to make farming her core business.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
