Mercedes Concepcion
Mercedes, 58, has been manufacturing bed linens (pillow cases, comforters and bath sets) for the last 17 years. She starts work at 7am and finishes at 10pm. She relates that once she starts work she does not leave her sewing machine until she completes it. She works Monday through Saturday and sometimes on Sundays too in order to advance. She also works according to the number of orders she has pending. It takes her three days to make a comforter cutting, sewing and pleating.

She started out with one of her sisters learning to sew little by little and shortly thereafter her sister gave her a sewing machine and also helped her pay for a sewing course and that was when she was able to become independent. Today, she owns four sewing machines. Among other products, she makes heart-shaped cushions especially for Mother’s Day and for Teacher’s Day. Prior to starting this business she worked for a lady selling American clothes.

The previous loan was of great help to her because she was able to buy her sewing machines as well as to have raw materials on hand. Also, with her profits she’s been able to do some home improvements buying home appliances, clothes and shoes for her and her husband. She has three children who are independent now; she lives only with her husband who is now retired.

She relates that with this loan she’ll be able to buy raw materials (assorted colors and styles of fabric) to satisfy the taste and preferences of her customers. This loan will help her make her dream of continuing to sew a reality since this is what she likes best.
