This communal bank is called "Los soñadores" and is comprised of 21 entrepreneurs who are all merchants, specifically selling clothing, baked goods, beauty products, sewing, minimarket, meat pies, olives, and services, among other things. They all live in the city of Valparaíso.

Monica is the secretary of the communal bank group. In the picture she is seated in the second row, second from the right, in blue jeans and a light green jacket with a black bag in her lap. Her hair is dark brown and long. She has been selling shower curtains, cushions, covers, clothing and women's articles such as purses, bags, and billfolds for a year. She says her work schedule depends on her availability.

She usually buys her merchandise in the city of Santiago from the dealers and stores that specialize in the sale of fabrics and other articles. She will use the loan to buy fabric for her sewing jobs and women's clothing in different styles and sizes. Her goal is to open a minimarket in a location to generate more income, so she can have a better lifestyle and give her family the best she can.

Monica lives with her husband, granddaughter and three daughters, ages 22, 17 and 15. Her family goal is to have her own house and for her daughters to finish their education to become successful professionals; and on a work level, to have an established business. She is very grateful and happy about the opportunity received through Fondo Esperanza, which will allow her to invest in her business. She says the training has been fundamental in her business and for her personal development, since she has learned how to organize and distribute her income and investments better. In her communal bank she feels very comfortable because the members are united and responsible.

About Fondo Esperanza

Fondo Esperanza (FE) is a private non-profit organization that supports entrepreneurship by providing micro-credit and training to people living in poverty in well over 100 cities throughout Chile. By providing these services, FE aims to improve the living conditions of the entrepreneurs and their families. In 2010, FE provided loans to more than 41,000 entrepreneurs. It utilizes a communal banking model in which groups of 18 to 25 clients meet on regularly and guarantee each other’s loans. The members use their portion of the loan to create or expand their own businesses. In the group meetings, clients receive training though the FE Entrepreneurship School, which enhances clients’ personal and business skills and ability to work in groups.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
