Harriet is a farmer in her rural home in the Nkubu area of Central Kenya where she lives with her family of five adult children. She has been in farming for over 20 years. Her farm produces mainly maize, beans and milk that goes to the local market.
Harriet has requested a loan of 30,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to buy piglets. She says the income will help improve her living standards as well as repay the loan. She intends to use the income from pig farming to increase the number of her dairy cows since milk still pays far better than pig farming though it requires a larger investment.
Harriet says rampant crop failure lately due to unpredictable weather changes has severely limited smallholder farms.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
