Teresa
María Teresa is a 67 year-old woman that lives with her family in the Santa Teresita community of Turrialba, Cartago province. The city of Cartago was Costa Rica’s capital until 1823. It is an elevated region located between the central and Talamanca mountain ranges. Given its proximity to two volcanoes, Irazú and Turrialba, weather is cold for most part of the year.
Teresa has been working with cattle for 8 years. She sells their milk to the customers she has acquired throughout all this time. She also makes diary products, which she delivers to food-selling business. So far she has received seven loans, which she has used to purchase new cattle and, at times, to improve her cattle barn. In this way, she has grown financially and improved her quality of life.
She currently needs a six-hundred colones (¢600.000) loan to purchase two cows and improve her current livestock. She is a member of Empresa de Crédito Comunal de El Sauce de Santa Teresita Turrialba, one of the 150 partner organizations of EDESA in Costa Rica.

María Teresa es una señora de 67 años de edad y vive con su familia en la comunidad de Santa Teresita, en el cantón de Turrialba ubicado en la provincia de Cartago. La ciudad de Cartago fue capital de Costa Rica hasta 1823, se caracteriza por tener un relieve montañoso formado por dos cordilleras: la Central y la cordillera de Talamanca, su clima es frío la mayoría del año consecuencia de los dos volcanes que posee llamados Irazú y Turrialba.
Doña Teresa trabaja con ganado desde hace 8 años y vende leche a la clientela que ha formado durante todo ese tiempo, además elabora productos a base de leche y lo entrega en negocios que se dedican a la venta de alimentos, ella ya ha obtenido siete créditos y los ha utilizados para renovar su ganado, y otras veces para mejorar el establo donde mantiene a su ganado, así ha ido creciendo económicamente y ha mejorado su calidad de vida.
En esta ocasión necesita un crédito de seiscientos mil colones (¢600.000) para comprar dos vacas y así mejorar el hato que tiene actualmente. Ella es socia de la Empresa de Crédito Comunal de El Sauce de Santa Teresita Turrialba, una de las 150 organizaciones socias de EDESA en Costa Rica.

As a small and relatively young MFI located in Costa Rica, EDESA has difficulty attracting other sources of capital. Many other microfinance funders do not work in Costa Rica, because overall the country is too rich. However, organizations such as EDESA work with extremely marginalized populations in Costa Rica that really need the access to capital that EDESA provides. By funding EDESA, Kiva lenders are allowing the organization to grow and reach more people than they otherwise would be able to reach.
