Carlos
Carlos, 51, lives with his family in the community of Santa Teresita, in the Turrialba Canton located in the province of Cartago. The city of Cartago was the capital of Costa Rica until 1823. It is known for its mountains formed by two ranges: the Central Range and the Talamanca Range. Its climate is cold most of the year because of the two volcanoes it has called Irazú and Turrialba.

For three years Carlos has been involved in livestock farming, mainly milk production. He is able to sell his products to several nearby communities and on weekends at the markets where his customers show how very satisfied they are with the quality of his products. He feels that with the help of the communal bank, he and his family can improve their lifestyle little by little.

Carlos currently wants a loan of 440,000 CRC to buy construction material to repair and expand his livestock stable.

Carlos is a member of the communal bank "El Sauce de Santa Teresita Turrialba", one of the 150 social organizations of EDESA in Costa Rica. This is his first loan and he says he hopes to be able to continue growing as a small business owner and persevere in his business.

Carlos es un hombre de 51 años de edad y vive con su familia en la comunidad de Santa Teresita, en el cantón de Turrialba ubicado en la provincia de Cartago. La ciudad de Cartago fue capital de Costa Rica hasta 1823, se caracteriza por tener un relieve montañoso formado por dos cordilleras: la Central y la cordillera de Talamanca, su clima es frío la mayoría del año consecuencia de los dos volcanes que posee llamados Irazú y Turrialba.
Desde hace tres años Carlos se dedica a la ganadería, específicamente a la producción de leche. Logra vender sus productos en varias comunidades cercanas y en las ferias de fin de semana los clientes se muestran muy satisfechos con la calidad de los mismos, considera que con la ayuda que le brinde la empresa de crédito comunal, él y su familia mejoraran poco a poco las condiciones de vida .
Actualmente Carlos desea obtener un microcrédito de cuatrocientos cuarenta mil colones (¢440.000) para comprar materiales de construcción para reparar y ampliar el establo donde tiene su ganado .
Carlos es socio de la Empresa de Crédito Comunal de El Sauce de Santa Teresita Turrialba, una de las 150 organizaciones socias de EDESA en Costa Rica. Este será su primer crédito y dice que con el espera poder seguir creciendo como microempresario y sacar su negocio adelante.

As a small and relatively young MFI located in Costa Rica, EDESA has difficulty attracting other sources of capital. Many other microfinance funders do not work in Costa Rica, because overall the country is too rich. However, organizations such as EDESA work with extremely marginalized populations in Costa Rica that really need the access to capital that EDESA provides. By funding EDESA, Kiva lenders are allowing the organization to grow and reach more people than they otherwise would be able to reach.
