John is a resident of Murang’a in Central Kenya and has been active in farming for over twenty years. He currently produces coffee, milk, maize, and bananas, which he sells to the local market. He is a widower with four adult children. His farm is run with the help of two farmhands.
John has requested a loan of 30,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to buy a chuff (or chaff) cutter. He says this will improve the task of feeding his dairy cows and improve their milk output. He adds he aspires to run a farm of at least five quality dairy cows.
John says limitation of funds has been the greatest impediment in farming and Juhudi Kilimo loans will meet smallholder farmers’ dire need.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
About Juhudi Kilimo:
Juhudi Kilimo is a for-profit social enterprise working with small-holder farmers in Kenya to finance purchases of dairy cows, chickens, agricultural equipment, and other assets that create immediate cash flow. Many of the assets are insured to prevent devastating business losses, and targeted technical assistance is provided to farmers, from agricultural training to basic book keeping and local market research.
