Linus is a farmer in Nkubu, Central Kenya, and is married with two children aged four and two years. He lives with his family in their rural home, where he operates his farm and sells his produce of maize, beans and milk at the local market. He runs his farm with the help of one farmhand.
Linus has requested a loan of 40,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to buy a water tank and water pipes in order to install an irrigation system on his farm. He says this will enable him to improve his farming, which is always curtailed by shortage of rain, and to help him feed his dairy animals, too.
Linus says sourcing of funds to do more commercial farming has been a real challenge, but is looking better with the availability of farming loans for small holder farmers.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
