The communal bank members carry out a variety of businesses among which we have clothing sales, chicken sales, CD sales, neighborhood store, pots sales, alpaca wool sweater making, Broasted chicken sales and food sales.

Herminia says that she’s been part of Pro Mujer for a year having joined thanks to an invitation from a member of the institution. She currently has a business making and selling skirts. She relates that she started the business when she used to help her mother do this kind of work and she now has her own business.

The loan she’ll take out now is to buy raw materials (fabric) from suppliers in the city of El Alto and after making them she’ll sell them in the weekend street markets. This way of working allows her to earn income to support her family the best way possible since she’s single and has a son. When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer she answers that she likes the health services.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
