The members of the “Aries” communal bank meet every fifteen days in the “Las Orquídeas” (The Orchids) neighborhood in the city of Portoviejo.

María Gloria is a member of this group which has 12 women and 3 men. They are involved in diverse activities like general commerce and services, among other things. They joined their efforts in order to access benefits offered by Fundación Espoir. During the time they’ve been together they have felt very good because of the support received.

María Gloria, 58, is married and has four children who are all adults now but the youngest of her children still lives with her. Her husband is a private employee.

In order to earn something on her own she started a small, home-based business six years ago. She sells large bottles of water and she says that to do so she has the help of two assistants she pays to do deliveries. She has two three-wheeled delivery carts her employees use to make the water deliveries. She has many customers that day to day place many orders. She says that at first it was difficult but as days passed she learned and orders started to come in. She currently has many people she supplies this vital liquid to.

She will use the loan to buy bottled water to sell daily and certain spare parts for the three-wheeled vehicles. She’s been in the communal bank for two cycles and likes it because of the help she gets from the bank. Her dream is to buy a small truck.

The small photo is of a member who wasn’t able to be present when the group photo was taken.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
