Maria is 69 years old and lives with her husband. They live in Northern Peru in a small rural community of around 150 families; they have electricity but no water services. Maria has set up a small shop in her own house, where she sells drinks and snacks. This shop has proven a success and she has developed a good reputation in the community, as her shop provides important supplies for the rest of the inhabitants. Moreover, she raises and commercializes animals, which she also has at the back of her humble house. As a result of the success of her shop and the strong demand for animals, she is looking for a loan of 2000 soles to invest in both of her businesses. In particular, she is looking to increase the stock of beer, which has proven very popular in her shop, as well as buying animals and animal feed. She feels this is the right strategic move and will help her to improve her family's living condition.
