Jeremiah is 25 years old and has been farming in his rural home in Litein for six years, producing milk, which he sells to Kenya Cooperative Creameries, and maize, which he sells to the local market. He is married with two children, aged one and three years. He also runs a retail business in the local market for additional income.
Jeremiah has requested a loan of 30,000 KES from Kiva partner Juhudi Kilimo to buy poultry birds. He says the venture into poultry farming will improve his farming income and make life better for his entire family. He plans to have at least three dairy cows in the future.
Jeremiah points to poor markets for farm produce as his major challenge.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
