Fighting for a better future? We need your help.

Creating a more equitable world takes a lot of time and energy, but at Kiva we’re in it for the long haul. 100% of money lent on Kiva goes to funding loans. That means we rely on donations from people like you to make this work possible. For a limited time, if you donate $35 or more, a $25 bonus will be added to your account (you’ll get an email once it’s there).

A loan of $650 helped to purchase a hairdresser's chair, a dressing table and a cabinet.

Ledis Esther's story

Ledis is a 34 year old woman who offers hair cutting, hair treatments, waxing and coloring, among other services, at her beauty salon located in Las Nieves de Barranquilla neighborhood. She is requesting her first Kiva loan in order to buy a hairdresser’s chair, a dressing table and a cabinet to offer better service to her customers.

Ledis has always been attracted by anything related to beauty. For this reason she decided to take a course in hairdressing four years ago where she learned much about the profession. Once she finished, she started doing hair at people’s homes and gradually became known and acquired customers. However Ledis wanted to have a fixed location where she would have all the equipment needed to provide her services. Thus she applied for a loan with a financial institution and with it bought the basics needed to start her business at home. Her customers are her neighbors in the area, although she will still go out to someone’s home when it is required.

Ledis pays cash weekly for the materials that she uses and buys from distributors in the city center. Her principal dream is to have a large place, well supplied with all the equipment needed, separate from her home.

She lives in a common law relationship and has three minor children. She wants to see them educated and grow up under the best conditions. That is why she does her best for her customers, so that she can increase her sales and earn more income.
