Afi A. is 50 years old and the married mother of a 26-year-old daughter. Her daughter helps her in their boutique, which is located in the central market of Adéta. Popular dress in Togo consists of a skirt and top cut and tailored from a length of fabric, and another length of fabric wrapped around the waist. These pieces of fabric, which are vibrantly colored and lightweight, are called pagnes. Selling pagnes is a popular business for women in Afi’s region, as they travel to Lomé, the capital, to purchase them to resell in the market in Adéta. With her loan Afi hopes to send her daughter to Lomé to buy more pagnes in various prints and colors to increase her stock. She also hopes that this trip will teach her daughter more about the business. With the revenue generated from this expansion, Afi will be able to continue to provide for her daughter and her husband.
