Nathan is a resident and a farmer in Kitale, Western Kenya. He is married and has three children aged twelve, five, and two months. His farm produces mainly maize on a commercial scale and provides income that he uses to meet his family’s basic needs. He has been in farming for three years.
Nathan has requested a loan of 52,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to buy and insure a dairy cow. He says the venture into dairy farming will provide his family with milk for daily consumption as well as provide income to meet other basic needs. His focus is to run a farm of not less than seven dairy cows so as to enjoy economies of scale.
Nathan, however, points at poor weather conditions and infrastructure as the major challenges.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
