Jane has been in active farming for 20 years and currently employs two farmhands on her farm, which majorly produces milk, maize, beans and tea to the local markets in her rural home in Kitale. She lives with her two children, but has seven children with the first five now being adults, all self-dependent.
Jane has requested a loan of 62,400 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to buy and insure a dairy cow. She says her focus is to own at least two better quality breeds of cows in the next 5 years. She believes this will generate enough milk with the capacity to meet family needs.
Jane says fluctuation in market prices remains a challenge.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
