Yusufu is a farmer in the Kitale area of Western Kenya and is married with six children with the first-born being twelve years and the last-born being only nine months old. Yusufu is aged thirty-four and has been in farming for five years. He gets additional income from his motorcycle transport business.
Yusufu is has requested a loan of 31,200 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to buy and insure a dairy cow. He hopes he will grow his business to three dairy cows and generate enough income to educate his children and venture into more businesses to spread business risks currently in farming.
Yusufu says the major challenge in farming is currently in shortage of feeds which results in high costs.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
