Nancy is a farmer in the Nkubu area of Central Kenya in her rural home area where she lives with her family of one child aged one. She has been in the farming business for 3 years and produces tea and bananas, which are sold within the local market. She gets additional income from her grocery retail business.
Nancy has requested a loan of 60,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to build a zero-grazing unit and buy poultry birds.. She says this will diversify her farming income and improve her family living standards. She also plans to buy more acres of land to expand her banana plantation.
Nancy says the high costs of farming inputs and labour are the greatest challenge in the farming business.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
