Agnes is a resident of Murang’a in Central Kenya where she lives with her family of four children - two of whom are adults and the other two are juniors who are still in school. She has been farming for 20 years and currently runs her farm with the help of one farmhand. She sells her produce of milk mainly to the Brookside Dairies Company.
Agnes has made a loan request of 84,800 KES from Kiva's partner Juhudi Kilimo to buy and insure a dairy cow. She says her years of experience in dairy farming has enabled her to know the benefits of growing quality breeds of dairy cows and general management of dairy farming. She hopes to earn more income and improve the general living standards of her family and educate her two children who are still in school.
She notes instability in milk prices and access to farming capital as the leading challenges to smallholder farmers. However, she is glad Juhudi Kilimo's services are now available to farmers.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
