Samuel has been in active farming for eighteen successive years in his home area of Nyamira, South Rift Kenya where he lives with his family of three children aged between sixteen and five. He runs his farm with three temporary farmhands. He gets additional income from his jaggery processing business.
Samuel has requested a loan 80,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to buy a dairy cow. He says he will use the farming income mainly to pay for the education of his children. He also plans to buy a vehicle to help in making deliveries to the market as well as bring in more income from transport business.
Samuel however says the major challenge in farming business has always been occasional dry spells that limit production.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
