Among them are a food stall, vegetable sales, a minimarket, fast food, a candy shop, a pastry shop, clothing sales, charcoal sales, services, and others. All of them are in the town of Chillán.
Marta, the communal bank's president, is pictured standing in the front row, the fourth one from right to left. She's wearing black colored trousers and a red colored coat. She wears her hair up and holds a folder and a bag in her hands.
She runs a retail business selling cleaning products and perfumes. She has been selling them to her customers on a door-to-door basis for the past two years. She works every day from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. She organizes her schedule according to the time she has available, since her children are young.
She usually buys her merchandise from perfume distributors, and she gets the cleaning products from supermarkets in the city of Santiago at low prices, which is financially convenient.
With the loan she will purchase a variety of perfumes and also cleaning products such as dishwashing liquid, sponges, detergent, etc.
One of her goals is to set up a sales booth in Chillán's town centre, in order to provide a better service for her customers and to improve her living conditions. Marta lives with her husband and two children aged 14 and 8, who are in school. One of her dreams is to set up her sales booth so that she can get better profits and stability for her family.
She's very glad and thankful for the opportunity she has been given by Fondo Esperanza to invest in her business. Furthermore, she's very comfortable in the communal bank she participates in, since there's trust and respect.

About Fondo Esperanza

Fondo Esperanza (FE) is a private non-profit organization that supports entrepreneurship by providing micro-credit and training to people living in poverty in well over 100 cities throughout Chile. By providing these services, FE aims to improve the living conditions of the entrepreneurs and their families. In 2010, FE provided loans to more than 41,000 entrepreneurs. It utilizes a communal banking model in which groups of 18 to 25 clients meet on regularly and guarantee each other’s loans. The members use their portion of the loan to create or expand their own businesses. In the group meetings, clients receive training though the FE Entrepreneurship School, which enhances clients’ personal and business skills and ability to work in groups.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
