The communal bank 9 de Abril is starting their first cycle with Pro Mujer, as part of the regional office of Santiago II. It comprises six members and is managed by a Board of Directors, where Galia is Treasurer. The members are involved in different businesses, such as: revolving funds, fruit sales, grocery store, arts and crafts, mattress sales, and cosmetics sales.
Galia says she has been a member of Pro Mujer for 15 years, and that she joined through a friend, who invited her. Currently she has a business selling wholesale food products, which she learned from her aunt.
The loan she is now requesting will be to increase capital: she will purchase rice and sugar at the outdoor markets in the city of El Alto and will later sell them at several offices. This way of working allows her to generate resources to support her family as much as possible, for she is in a common-law marriage and has five children.
When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, she says she likes the health trainings.

This is a Group Loan
In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
