For over nine years in Calamba, Misamis Occidental, Charmen, a 29-year-old married mother of three children, has made a living through the operation of a nipa-making (weaving nipa palm to make roofing materials) business. She earns 4,500 PHP a month for these activities.
In 2011, Charmen joined GDMPC to gain access to financial services to help improve her business and living situation. She is now requesting a loan of 10,000 PHP to buy nipa palm to make roofing materials. She plans to use the additional revenue generated from the loan as a reserve for future emergencies.
Gata Daku Multi-Purpose Cooperative (GDMPC) was founded in 1992 by 32 farmer-members to empower people by providing livelihood opportunities and other support services. Today, it has over 15,000 members located in upland, lowland and coastal regions of the Philippines, and offers credit, savings, education, and various social services.
