Maria Patricia
Maria is married and has two children, ages 12 and 13. Thanks to having more than 25 years of experience in preparing foods, one day she decided to start her own business to have better financial opportunities. She worked for nine years as a chef at a restaurant, and approximately four years ago she started selling food out of her home, and little by little it grew. Currently she offers her customers breakfasts, lunches and many other meals. Of course, she doesn't have the space to set up a restaurant and fit in some chairs and tables. It's for this reason that Maria is requesting a loan in order to make improvements to section off a restaurant in her home and acquire some tables and chairs to start up the business. In this way Maria will be able to fulfill her dream of having her own business and improve the household finances, as well as being able to offer her children access to higher quality education and better economic opportunities.

Important Information

This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
