Mary is a farmer in the Kitale area of Western Kenya, where she has been farming for twenty years. Her farm is currently run with the help of one farmhand and produces milk, maize, beans, and eggs as the leading products. All her products are sold within the local markets.
Mary has requested a loan of 80,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to buy poultry birds at 50,000 KES and construct a dairy unit at 30,000 KES. She says the farming income will help her educate six of her children who are still schooling.
Mary adds that Juhudi Kilimo loans have made her realize her potential in business, since this is not her first loan.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
