Jacob is a farmer in the Nkubu area of Central Kenya where he lives with his family of ten children. The oldest seven are adults and the youngest three are still in school. His farm produces milk, maize, and beans. He runs his farm with the help of one farmhand.
Jacob has requested a loan of 60,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to buy a water tank, water pipes and poultry birds at 20,000 KES each. He plans to buy more parcels of land for better farming.
Jacob says the major challenge in farming is insufficient rain.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
