Henry is a farmer in the Kisii area of the South Rift in Kenya. He is married with 10 children who are all adults. The youngest child still lives at home while attending school. He has 30 years of experience in farming and runs a farm that currently produces tea, coffee, maize and milk, which he sells to the local market.
Henry has requested a loan of 60,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to buy a dairy cow. He plans to have a farm with at least four dairy cows in the next five years. He believes the acquisition of a better breed of cow will improve his income. He states that the poor road network, animal diseases and occasional drought are the main challenges he faces in his business.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
